The shuttle car drops me off in front of the Shiley Eye Institute, part of UCSD Healthcare. I’m getting a clouded, natural lens removed and a clear, acrylic one put in. Even though cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures in the aging population and I have Dr. Robert N. Weinreb—the best possible surgeon—doing the operation, I am anxious.

High and low levels of high-density lipoprotein were found to be significantly associated with the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, reports a team of researchers from the University of California San Diego.

The research began in 2021 to study the PRPH2 gene linked to early macular degeneration and loss of central vision. This stem cell research aims to develop an early diagnosis and cure. The Nixon Visions Foundation is also partnering with the Foundation Fighting Blindness to build momentum and increase national and global research in this area.
