
Researchers at the Shiley Eye Institute and Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and UC San Diego Health evaluated a commercially available wearable headset as a display platform for endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), a minimally invasive procedure used to treat blockage of the tear drainage system. In a study cohort of 32 procedures, researchers compared surgeries performed using the headset with those performed using a traditional monitor and assessed operative time, surgical outcomes and surgeon-reported workload.

[https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ajoint.2026.100288] the study found that procedures performed using the headset were associated with shorter operating times and lower surgeon-reported workload, while successful outcomes were achieved in all cases. Researchers also reported potential ergonomic benefits, including improved comfort and a more neutral head and neck posture during surgery.
