David B. Granet

David B. Granet, M.D., M.H.C.M.,F.A.A.O, F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P., is the Anne Ratner Chair of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Director of the Anne F. and Abraham Ratner Children’s Eye Center located within the Shiley Eye Institute. He is the Director of the Divisions of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Eye Alignment Disorders for the Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology at University of California, San Diego and also Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics at UC San Diego. He is the Adult ocular motility specialist for the Shiley Eye Institute.


Dr. Granet earned a medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine where he served as a President of his class. He spent a transitional internship year at UCLA-Harbor Medical Center and served as a chief resident at New York University Medical Center. He then completed a special two year fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and ocular motility disorders at the renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.  Recently Dr. Granet returned to the classroom and earned a Masters Degree in Health Care Management at Harvard University, gaining expertise in topics like, Leadership and Design Thinking and more.


Dr. Granet specializes in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Re-alignment (strabismus). His clinical interests also include state-of-the-art adjustable suture strabismus surgery, childhood eye misalignments and disorders, nystagmus, and the role of vision in learning disorders.


The author of over 170 scientific articles, in 2009 Dr. Granet co-founded the World Congress of Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus - with meetings held worldwide and in Amsterdam for 2020. He is a past Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) section of Ophthalmology, the first surgical specialist asked to lobby on behalf of children by the AAP and the co-author of their textbook for pediatricians on eye care. He has been awarded the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Lifetime Honor Award from the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. This year alone he was awarded the Swiss Academy of Ophthalmology "Innovation Award” and named on the Ophthalmology Power List as one of the top Ophthalmologists worldwide and an Agent of Change.  A speaker in demand worldwide, his communication skills cross over into teaching the public about medical issues as the host of the emmy award winning television show, Health Matters. His work has led him to be perennially named in “Best Doctors in America” and “Top Doctors”.
